Overtown residents celebrating after Christmas lights confirmation

After weeks of being left in the dark, Overtown residents are celebrating after being told they will get Christmas lights.

North Lanarkshire Council confirmed to the Wishaw Press that the village will have festive decorations this year, after weeks of uncertainty.

Nancy Kerr, chairwoman of the Overtown Brighter Village Committee, said: “I am ecstatic we will be getting the lights this year.

“I have been trying to get in contact with North Lanarkshire Council for weeks and to finally hear this good news is just amazing.”

Nancy was first told that the village would not be getting illuminations in September, due to council budget cuts.

“For about 25 years we have had our usual switch-on event”, she said.

“People were worried about this year’s not going ahead, as it is a big deal in our village.

“Santa comes and gives the kids presents and we switch on the lights about 3pm.

“It is always a great day for Overtown.”

Fiona Fotheringham, SNP councillor for the Wishaw ward, said: “This is great news for Overtown.

“I spoke to Nancy and was glad to hear that the lights are safe this year.

“I will be working to make sure that the lights will run for years to come.”
