Alice Gerstenberg’s Overtones, written in 1916, was one of the first plays to dramatise the subconscious on stage. The play explores the psyche of two women, looking at how they appear to each other and to their inner selves. It displays the secret dialogue that goes on incessantly within the psyche, and how personalities must negotiate or perform certain societal rules or norms. Almost 100 years later, the themes remain pertinent, and will be given new light under director Bianca Bonino for the 2015 season of women playwrights and directors.
