Overrunning M62 roadworks near Leeds to continue all day - with two hour delays expected at rush hour

Overrunning work on the M62 will continue all day as motorists are warned of two hour delays during afternoon rush hour.

Improvements to the westbound carriageway surface between junction 30 for Wakefield and junction 29 for the M1 were supposed to be completed during last night.

But work on lanes three and four overran causing delays of around an hour and half during morning rush hour.

Highways England said contractors have been working on the scene all day but it is now confirmed that the lanes will still be closed for afternoon rush hour.

In a tweet, Highways England said: "There will be a full closure tonight, westbound from junction 30 to junction 29, planned to start 8pm.

"Congestion has improved but expected to worsen with up to two hour delays as rush hour approaches."

A spokesman for Highways England added: "Due to a serious defect in the carriageway between junction 30 (Wakefield) and junction 29 (M1) lanes 3 and 4 will remain closed throughout the day until repairs can be carried out safely tonight. Engineers are currently on site assessing the 225m defect in the road.

"Traffic is currently queuing back to junction 32a and drivers are advised to expect delays throughout the day, particularly through this evenings rush hour when delays of up to 2 hours are expected.

"Drivers are advised to plan ahead and avoid the area if possible."

They said a signed diversion route is in place for traffic travelling westbound on the M62 at J35 via the M18 and M1.
