Overlooked symbol on potato packaging sparks fierce debate over storage

There are many debates to be had when it comes to foodstuffs; some might keep their sauces and condiments in the cupboard, whereas others swear the place for them is the fridge. For others it is the same issue with eggs.

But how many have divisive opinions on where to store potatoes? As it turns out, there are many.

One TikTok user, @bethking61, took to the world of TikTok to highlight a small fridge symbol on the packaging of some potatoes that told her to keep them in the fridge: "At home store below 5°C" it reads.

As it turns out, this has shocked many, with TikTok users coming out the woodwork to add to the debate in which one contributor might have just opened up a rather large can of worms by saying they keep their spuds under the sink - what, next to the bleach?

The little-known symbol that has sparked an open TikTok debate (@bethking69)

Resolute in her conviction that vegetables belong in a cupboard, Beth was baffled - along with several onlookers - upon making the contrary discovery.

Her caption added: "Maybe i have been living under a rock but i always thought they belonged in a dark cupboard."

She added: "Is this NEW? Is my whole life a lie...".

What the debate showed is just how split the general public are on this seemingly innocuous issue, with no obvious solution nor clear cut answer.

One responder offered the most controversial opinion of the lot, saying: "I've never met anyone that kept their potatoes in the fridge..." while a second said: "Mine go under the sink."

Another, who said they'd been a chef for a decade said: "I've been a chef for 10+ years and always keep spuds in the fridge, even as a wee bit my mum kept them in the fridge too."

Someone else added: "If I don't find it in the fridge I don't put it in the fridge," but another commenter argued "that's why there is a potato drawer next to the salad one."

Another added: "Why have I always put big potatoes in a dark cupboard and new potatoes in the fridge. I’m questioning my own logic."

A different fridge fan said: "I've been keeping mine in the fridge for as long as I can remember. Never have sprouts or spoilage."

Maybe its time we all make the conversion and take our spuds out the dark cupboards and into the light of the crisper drawer.
