Two workers have been critically injured in a shooting ar a Kansas City elementary school, with police taking a suspect into custody.

Overland Park police spokesman Officer John Lacy said the shooting happened at Sunrise Point Elementary School in the Blue Valley school district during the morning. Mr Lacy said that police believe an argument erupted between co-workers installing synthetic turf on the school's playground.

The shooting suspect fled and tried to carjack someone at a nearby car wash, according to The Kansas City Star. The suspect then stole another vehicle at gunpoint a few minutes later.

Authorities surrounded a home, with Overland Park Fire Department spokesman Jason Rhodes saying it was where police found a sport utility vehicle they believe had been stolen.

A police armoured vehicle began to move towards the house, said Overland Park Police Chief Frank Donchez. The suspect came out at that time and surrendered peacefully.

Mr Donchez said the person who surrendered had been “positively identified” as the suspect police had been seeking.

Overland Park Police said in a tweet that no school employees were involved in the shooting. District spokeswoman Becky Miller says no students were on campus.

One shooting victim was in surgery and the other is in a critical but stable condition, police said.
