Overheard coffee shop chat spurs Derby social media agency on to record year

An overheard conversation in a coffee shop has helped a Derby social media agency go on to achieve a record-breaking year.

Status Social, which provides social media management and training, has reported record profits and turnover.

The business has also recently moved into new offices in Friar Gate, which are two-and-a-half times larger than its previous home in nearby Friar Gate Studios, giving the company more room for future expansion.

According to directors Mark and Kerry Saxby, one of the firm’s biggest contract wins came after overhearing a conversation in a Starbucks coffee shop in Little Eaton, in which the topic of social media came up.

Kerry said: “There was a meeting taking place on the other side of the room and because it was pretty quiet in the coffee shop, we couldn’t help but overhear some of the conversation.

“It didn’t take us long to realise that two of the people were from a company we had heard of – and they were discussing a campaign with a supplier.”

After the meeting broke up, Mark and Kerry wandered over and introduced themselves.

Mark said: “We said we hoped we weren’t appearing rude but we had overheard the words ‘social media’ and we happened to be from the best social media agency in the UK – Status Social!

“One of them recognised me from being connected on LinkedIn and said she’d be in touch. A few weeks later we were invited in for a chat to discuss an exciting new project!”

Since October 2017, Status Social’s monthly sales records have been consistently broken with the last financial year being the firm’s best yet. Turnover was up 52% in 2018-19 while profits increased by 59%.

Kerry said: “We and our clients have generated nearly £1.5 million in recordable sales through social media and that has really helped prospective clients trust that we will do a good job for them.

“We’ve also seen a big increase in the number of businesses using our social media recruitment service to find great candidates at an affordable rate.”
