Commuters were left baffled after a train hitting an abandoned Christmas tree caused severe delays on the Overground during rush hour.

Trains between Stratford and Clapham Junction and Richmond were hit by disruption after the collision near Highbury and Islington on Monday evening.

The bizarre announcement was made around 6.30pm, leaving rush-hour travellers stuck on platforms.

Bemused commuters mocked the strange excuse for delays.

One labelled it "the ultimate abandoned tree" while another said: "Xmas tree on the line! Never heard that before!"

Rory O’Neill, TfL’s General Manager for London Overground, said: “At around 5pm yesterday, the driver of a London Overground service from Clapham Junction reported hitting a tree on the track as they approached Highbury & Islington station.

"No one was injured and services were quickly resumed, but this did lead to some delays during the evening peak for which we apologise.”
