Due to about three out of ten students, overdue payment of tuition fees at private schools now exceeds 2 billion baht, according to the Association Board of Coordination and Promotion of Private Education (APPE).
Supaset Khanakul, president of the association, said on Wednesday that overdue payment of tuition fees at private schools from last year to May this year has reached 2.17 billion baht. The outstanding payments are attributed to 575,601 students, or 35.43% of all students in private schools.
He said about 30% of the defaulting cases resulted from irresponsibility while the rest have been tied to economic problems faced by families.
The situation has affected salary payment for teachers and personnel as well as the quality of education at those affected private schools.
The operators of these schools have agreed that the government should implement debt collection mechanisms and give financial assistance to parents in need, Mr Supaset said.
