"Overcrowded" platform shows real impact trespassers cause for train passengers

This is the impact a trespasser caused to dozens of train passengers who were left crowded and stranded on a platform.

Passenger Richard Ash was one of many people left queuing for hours, after three train services were terminated at Rock Ferry .

Due to a trespasser on the line, in the tunnel at Birkenhead Central, Merseyrail cancelled the 16:55, 17:02 and 17:20 trains - on May 25.

A number of passengers were then offloaded from the trains at Rock Ferry.

In pictures taken a huge crowd of passengers can be seen waiting on the platform.

The rail users can also be seen having to stagger themselves on the stairs leading down to the platform - due to there being no space below.

Richard, who was amongst the crowds, said due to the amount of people waiting, the next service was too full to accommodate them all.

And Merseyrail confirmed disruption to the line lasted for two hours, due to the incident.

He added: "The crowd waiting for the train at Rock Ferry was so large that it filled the platform and backed all the way up the footbridge ramps.

"I understand disruption is to be expected, but what was not expected was that passengers of three trains would find their trains terminated at Rock Ferry, then the following trains would run through without stopping to pick them up.

"The announcements said there was a train "close behind" we could get but the first train to pick up, after two which did not stop, was at 17:41, but that was so full that most passengers could not board and had to wait for the 17:44 or later trains.

"Staff on the station appeared to be reliant on information passed on from train crew about what was going on.

"This information was frequently incorrect, as crew were only being informed of their own movements a short distance ahead.

"The only announcements made over the PA were the generic "subject to delay or cancellation" ones, there was no announcement of when the next train might run.

"The electronic display boards continued to show long overdue trains as "cancelled" with no consistent time for an actually running train - it kept moving into the future."

Trespassing on a train line is illegal those caught can face court and up to a £1000 fine.

A spokeswoman for Merseyrail said it tries to work as quickly as possible to restore services, following incidents of trespassing.

The spokeswoman added: "A man was trespassing in the tunnel between Birkenhead Central and Green Lane stations, causing disruption to Wirral line services.

"The man was found and safely removed from the track, with services resuming soon after.

“It is a criminal offence to trespass on the railways and electrified lines need to be switched off until the trespasser is found and removed, resulting in delays and cancellations to services.

“Merseyrail works in partnership with the British Transport Police, Merseyside Police and Network Rail to resolve any instances of trespassing quickly and restore services for our passengers as soon as possible.”

Merseyrail added that a number of services had to terminated at Rock Ferry to stop further delays.

Their spokeswoman said: “With trains being isolated due to the electrical line being switched off while we safely removed the trespasser, a number of services had to terminate at Rock Ferry. Had these trains ran their full distance, there would have been extended delays.

“By terminating them, this allowed us to get services up and running without further impacting passengers.”
