Over half of Ireland's new chlamydia cases reported in Dublin area

Over half of Ireland's new chlamydia cases have been reported in the Dublin area.

The latest report on STI outbreaks across Ireland has revealed a surge in infections in the Dublin area compared to the rest of the country.

According to the latest Health Service Protection Centre's weekly report for week 45 of 2021, there were a total of 188 STI cases reported in the Dublin area, out of a total of 349 STI infections reported in Ireland from November 7 - 13.

Cases of chlamydia surged by 94 in the east out of a total of 207 cases across the country - more than triple any other region in the country with the next highest being 28 cases in the north-east.

So far in 2021, 3143 cases of chlamydia have been reported in Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare, out of a total of 6017.

The STI with the second-highest number of infections in the last week is gonorrhoea with Dublin and surrounding areas reporting 33 new cases out of 54 nationally.

Dublin, Wicklow, and Kildare have reported a total of 1,365 cases of gonorrhoea so far in 2021.

Cases of syphilis in the Dublin region have grown by 27 in the week up to November 13.

In total, 33 cases were detected nationwide. 556 cases of infection have been detected in the east in 2021.

Earlier in the year, an outbreak of syphilis was declared which led to St James Hospital opening a walk-in STI test clinic.
