Over half of Dubliners associate National Ploughing Championships with muck and wellies while one in five don't get the fuss, survey shows

Dubliners associate the National Ploughing Championships with muck and wellies, while one in five don’t get the fascination, a survey has found.

In an attitude survey of 1,000 people by Lottoland, 20% said they don’t understand the fuss while 51% associate the agri event with muck and wellies.

Lottoland's Graham Ross said: “While huge crowds are once again expected to attend the event this year, for many in Irish society the Championships are the ultimate mystery.

“We might be a small island but this survey shows that there remains quite a cultural gap between what some parts of the country think and feel regarding the countryside festival and what will actually be happening on the ground this week.”

The survey also revealed Dubliners were the most cynical of all regions as they had the highest score for associating the Ploughing with ‘the smell of cow s***e’.

Nearly 20% of respondents think politicians just want to be seen at the event while 16% believe the event will consist mostly of farmers complaining about Brexit.

And 11% associate the ‘farmer festival’ with “awful country music playing on the loudspeakers” and 13% think it’s an opportunity for people to give out about “neglected life in rural Ireland”.
