Over half a month worth of rain to hit Scotland in 24 hours as Met Office issues yellow weather warning

More than half a month’s worth of rain is set to fall over a 24 hour period as weather experts issue a yellow warning for much of Scotland.

Forecasters at the Met Office are predicting a washout on the west coast between 1am on Friday and 3am on Saturday.

Experts say 60mm of rain could fall in some parts of the Strathclyde region during that time before showers clear later on Saturday morning.

The Met Office is warning that the adverse weather could cause disruption to travel on the roads and on public transport.

Forecasters have also stated that a few homes and businesses could be flooded as a result of the conditions.

Areas such as Glasgow, Stirling, Ayrshire and Dumfries are expected to bear the brunt of the poor weather.

The forecast for tonight and tomorrow reads: “A dry evening with some late sunshine. Then clouding over with rain spreading from the west in the early hours, becoming heavy at times.

“Friday will be cloudy with rain for much of the day, some heavy especially over high ground of Argyll and Ayrshire. Becoming drier in the evening.”

The news comes just a day before the Scottish Government is due to lift the five mile restriction on travel amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Self catering accommodation without shared facilities is also expected to reopen for Scots from tomorrow as part of the Government’s route map out of lockdown.

The Met Office has listed the areas that will be most affected by heavy rainfall on Friday and early Saturday morning.
