Over a quarter of Irish football fans hope England wins Euro 2020

Around a quarter of Irish soccer fans are hoping that football will come home for England and that the Three Lions will win Euro 2020.

Findings from Paddy Power show that 26% of Irish fans are rooting for Gareth Southgate's men and want them to lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy on Sunday.

England takes on Denmark in the semi-finals tomorrow - and will be hoping to book their place in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Research from the Irish bookies shows that 74% of Irish fans hope England will falter before the final - but 26% want to see the Three Lions lift the trophy.

People in Tipperary are most likely to cheer on England, at 52%, while people in Cavan are least likely to root for Gareth Southgate's men, at just 9%.

Irish soccer supporters are the most in favour of seeing England captain Harry Kane lift the trophy, at 31%, followed by hurling fans, at 29%, rugby fans, at 24% and GAA fans, at 19%.

And only 33% of Irish people who admit to supporting Premier League clubs most weekends will back England.

Paddy Power has pledged to donate €10,000 to Irish football clubs for every goal that England score during Euro 2020.

A spokesperson said: "We asked Irish fans to get behind England as part of our #SaveOurGame campaign, but it looks like old habits die hard.

"Only 26% of our fellow countrymen and women will get behind the Three Lions.

“But if you’re part of that cohort, head to Tipperary, where you’ll find yourself amongst your kin in the majority.

"And don’t be surprised to see the flag of St George hanging over the Rock of Cashel come Sunday should Gareth Southgate navigate his charges to the final.”
