Over 90% of LGBTI+ youth are struggling with anxiety, stress, or depression during the COVID-19 lockdown, a survey has revealed.
This is in comparison to 53% of the general youth population.
Additionally 55% said they battled suicide ideation during the pandemic.
And a further 45% of young LGBTI+ people struggled with self-harm while 60% said they felt lonely during the lockdown, figures from LGBTI+ Life in Lockdown survey by BeLonG To Youth services found.
The findings come as the Aviva Stadium is set to light up with Pride colours for two days from Friday, June 26.
Additionally the stadium has donated €50,000 to BeLonG To Youth Services to help fund support groups for LGBTI+ youths.
BeLonG To Youth Services CEO Moninne Griffith said “Our research highlighted some alarming stats and emphasises the importance of LGBTI+ young people having access to spaces and supports for their mental health and wellbeing.
“We are extremely grateful for the additional funding Aviva has given us to sustain the increased levels of support until the end of the year.
“We can now continue to address the needs of those who are most vulnerable in society, creating safe spaces to allow LGBTI+ young people to be who they truly are. We are looking forward to all shining bright this Pride.”
