Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday announced a scheme to distribute free Internet data cards to government and aided college and polytechnic students across Tamil Nadu so as to help them attend online classes till April.

With the cards, students can download 2 GB of data every day for four months from January to April, he said in a statement.

The cards would be procured through the State-owned Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT), he said.

A total of 9,69,047 students pursuing arts and science, technical and engineering programmes in government and government-aided colleges and polytechnics would benefit from the scheme.

Scholarship students

The scheme would also cover students who avail themselves of government assistance (scholarships) and pursue these programmes in self-financing colleges, Mr. Palaniswami said.

The Chief Minister urged the students to make the most of the scheme during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic to excel in their studies.
