Over 9,000 students appealing Leaving Cert exam results this year

There has been a huge increase in the numbers of Leaving Cert students appealing their exam results this year, it has been revealed.

Over 9,000 students appealed the result of more than 17,000 grades, a 74 percent rise on the number of students who made appeals last year.

It comes following a landmark High Court decision last year to speed up the appeals process.

Wexford student Rebecca Carter brought the State Examination Commission (SEC) to the High Court over their decision not to recheck her results until October, at which point it would be too late for the student to take her place on the veterinary medicine course in UCD.

The High Court ruled in her favour and this year's appeals process will see students receiving the result of a re-check weeks earlier than previously, RTE reports.

This is intended to allow colleges to offer a place to students who qualify for a course after a re-check.

The SEC said the demand for appeals is greater than expected but assured students they will receive a decision by September 16.

Higher Level Biology is the subject most appealed this year, with over 2,000 students asking for their grades to re-checked.

And over 1,900 students are appealing the result of their Higher Level Irish paper and 1,925 appealing the grade they received in Higher Level English.

Those seeking an appeal on their Higher Level Maths grade has also risen, with 1,411 asking for a re-check, an increase of 167% on last year.

Last year, 16% of appeals were successful resulting in higher marks for those candidates but five papers were downgraded.
