Over 800,000 viewers tuned in to RTE to watch Limerick beat Cork in historic All-Ireland final

Over 800,000 viewers tuned in to watch Limerick beat Cork to win another All-Ireland title on Sunday.

The Treaty men proved worthy winners of the Senior Hurling Championship, as they blew the Rebels away at Croke Park in front of 40,000 fans.

An average of 760,000 viewers tuned in to watch The Sunday Game Live on RTÉ2 at home, as the action unfolded.

The numbers peaked at 5.08pm in the final minute of the match, with 860,000 watching as referee Fergal Horgan called time on the 2021 championship season.

RTE revealed there was also a huge share of 71.4% of those watching TV at the time tuned in to the match.

In addition to this, there were 92,000 live streams on the RTÉ Player to see Limerick being crowned champions for the second year in a row.

The historic day saw the counties meet for the first time in an All-Ireland Hurling final.

On the centenary year of the Liam McCarthy Cup, Limerick captain Declan Hannon became only the second captain in history to raise the trophy on three occasions.

Christy Ring has been the only other captain to do so.

The win marks the Treaty men's third All-Ireland crown in four years as they cement their status as the team to beat in the coming years.

GAA fans from across the world tuned in as GAA GO was accessed live from 150 countries including Botswana, Afghanistan, Yemen, El Salvador, Burkina Faso and Iran.

Members of the Irish Defence Forces in Lebanon tuned in, as well as some of our Irish Paralympic team in Tokyo.

There’s more action anticipated this weekend on RTÉ2 in the second All-Ireland Football semi-final between Tyrone and Kerry on Saturday, August 28th.

At 2.30pm Joanne Cantwell will be joined by Ciarán Whelan, Eamonn Fitzmaurice, Pat Spillane and Sean Cavanagh for live coverage from Croke Park ahead of the 3.30pm throw-in time.

Commentary will be by Ger Canning and Dessie Dolan.

The match can be streamed live on the RTÉ Player.

On The Sunday Game Live next weekend, Joanne will be back in Croke Park for the All-Ireland Camogie semi-finals where she will be joined by Anne Marie Hayes and Ursula Jacob.
