Over £7000 raised to pay vet bill after dog knocked down in West Lothian

Kind-hearted animal lovers have raised over £7000 to help a dog who was badly injured after being hit by a car.

One-year-old beagle Bailey was left “screaming in pain” when he suffered a crushed paw, a leak on his lung and severely broken bones following the horror accident last week.

Surgeons at the Dick Vet centre in Edinburgh feared the pup may have needed an amputation but his owners say he is recovering well and are hoping for the best.

Bailey went missing while out for a walk at the Oakbank Industrial Estate near Livingston last Thursday.

His disappearance sparked a massive search before he was found screaming out in pain by a passer-by the next day after being hit by a car.

Despite having pet insurance, Bailey’s devastated owners, Emma Lundy and partner Michael, may have to fork out over £6000 for treatment and friend Jane White set up a Go Fund Me page which has so far raised £7670.

On Monday he spend over six hours in surgery and by the next day brave Bailey had managed to get up on his feet to try to walk.

His owner Emma told our sister site Edinburgh Live: “Someone said they saw Bailey get hit by a car. A woman picked him up and drove him to the vets.

“He was alert but he was in a lot of pain. He was screaming. His paw was crushed and there was concern about his breathing.”

She added: “We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the support. People were showing up with food and clothing for us.”

A Facebook page has also been set up to keep supporters up-to-date with Bailey’s progress and thank people for their overwhelming generosity.

And in Tuesday there was some good news following his surgery.

A post on the page said: “Emma and Michael have just been to see Bailey and he is doing really well.

“He recognised them when he seen them and got up on his feet and tried to walk. Even made a little trip outside into the fresh air.

“He is still very wobbly and can’t put weight on his front paw yet but is toe touching which the vets have said is a very good sign !

“He even ate a little bit of chicken for Emma.

“The chest tube is now out. He still has an IV drip in for antibiotics, on a high dose of pain medication and is very swollen.

But overall a very positive visit.”
