Over 60,000 unemployed in Japan due to pandemic

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said that 60,439 people, including prospective employees, have been dismissed from their jobs or seen their contracts terminated for reasons related to the spread of the novel coronavirus, as of Sept. 23.

By sector, as of Sept. 18, the restaurant business topped the list of the largest number of job losses for the first time.

The manufacturing and lodging industries used to see the most job losses. "The employment situation remains gloomy in many industries," a ministry official said.

By prefecture, Tokyo had the highest number of people who had lost their jobs at 15,745 as of Sept. 18, more than twice the figure of 7,575 as of July 22. It was followed by Osaka Prefecture with 5,388 and Aichi Prefecture with 3,273.

By employment type, 29,096 non-regular workers had lost their jobs between May 25 and Sept. 18.

The number of people who have been dismissed or seen their contracts terminated for reasons related to the pandemic continued to increase after topping 10,000 in late May.
