Over 45,000 domestic violence calls made to gardai so far in 2022

A staggering 45,487 calls were made to the gardai so far this year reporting incidents of domestic violence.

These resulted in 9,710 criminal charges, while a further 3,799 of the cases were breaches of existing domestic court orders.

The figures were collated nationwide from the Garda Pulse system up until 1.30am on November 11.

They were released by Justice Minister Helen McEntee at the request of Independent Clare TD Michael McNamara.

The worst area in the country for reported domsestic violence is west Dublin with 4,408 incidents, followed by the northside of the capital with 3,823, south Dublin with 2,995, Limerick with 2,546, Cork city with 2,373 and Kildare with 2,075.

The area with the highest number of domestic violence criminal cases is west Dublin with 947, while the area with the lowest is County Clare with 120 cases pending.

Gardai count domestic abuse as a domestic dispute, breach of a barring order, breach of a safety order, breach of a protection order .

Reacting to the figures the Justice Minister said she is committed to tackling domestic, sexual and gender based violence.

Helen McEntee said: “In June I launched the new whole of government strategy to combat domestic , sexual and gender based violence.

“This new plan has a particular focus on prevention and on ensuring victims are better supported.

“It sets an overall goal of zero tolerance in our society for domestic violence.

“I know from engaging with the Garda Commissioner that domestic abuse incidents receive the highest priority response from Gardai.

“In addition Divisional Protective Service Units have been rolled out across the country and are. Ow available in every Garda Division to engage with vulnerable victims."
