Over 380 job positions likely to be shut as BBC proposes changes

Around 382 job positions are likely to be scrapped in the BBC World Service as the network has proposed several changes, including the closure of “some radio services” in Arabic, Bangla and Persian, Reuters reported.

The step is aimed at reducing costs, Reuters journalist Yuvraj Malik tweeted. Malik posted a proposal which also mentions that the BBC will close “some TV programming on local broadcasters across Africa and Asia”.

The broadcaster will be “focusing on our own platforms and presence in the markets, and reducing the volume of syndicated TV and radio content on partners’ platforms on some territories”.

The BBC has said that its proposals were subject to consultation with staff and trade unions, according to Reuters.

Correction: The headline of this report earlier mentioned that some regional language services are likely to be shut. The error is regretted.
