Over 300,000 energy customers are without power across the U.S. as large portions of the country grapple with a major winter storm. Skies are impacted as well, with some 1,400 flights cancelled and hundreds more delayed.
The storm is moving east from the Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic, producing heavy to moderate snow. About 60 million people are currently under Winter weather alerts. The National Weather Service said some areas can expect "substantial disruptions to daily life."
Looking at flight disruptions, the largest amount of cancellations are taking place at Ronald Reagan Washington national Airport in Virginia, as well as in Baltimore/Washington international Thurgood Marshall Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, St. Louis Lambert International and Dallas Forth Worth International airport.
As for blackouts, the most affected state is Virginia, with almost 90,000 energy connections without power, according to PowerOutage.com.
Schools are closed in many places in the East Coast, including public schools in Washington D.C., Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax.
Congress is still expected to certify the 2024 election results, House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Sunday. "The Electoral Count Act requires this on Jan. 6 at 1 p.m. So, whether we're in a blizzard or not, we're going to be in that chamber making sure this is done," he said. Washington D.C. is among the worst hit areas, with crews spotted clearing snow from the steps of the Capitol.
