Coronavirus robs local rugby legend of chance to meet first grandchild

More than £3,000 has been raised for the heartbroken family of a Wakefield "legend" who died after contracting coronavirus.

Father-of-two Dave Roberts died on Tuesday, April 14, several weeks after he was admitted to Pinderfields Hospital.

He has been described as "an Eastmoor Dragons legend", as he played for the amateur rugby league club in Wakefield for many years, before he became a popular coach and then the club chairman.

A GoFundMe page was set up shortly after his tragic death and more than £3,000 has been donated to help his family.

The page states: "Dave leaves behind his wife Ann, who is recovering from her own illness, and two children, his daughter Charlotte, who is expecting their first grandchild and their son Toby.

"I can imagine that there are going to be tough times ahead so my heart goes out to them.

"If there is anything they need just remember it is that we are there.

"Lets get round them together, to do what Dave would have been the first to do and step up and help."

It adds: "The thing is in rugby league, it’s not just a game, it’s a way of life and a chosen family that comes together in a time of need."

More than 5,200 people, including 335 in Wakefield, have now been diagnosed with Covid-19.

Across the UK, 93,873 people have tested positive for the virus and 12,107 people have died.
