Over 220,000 cigarettes 'hidden in roof of minibus' found and seized by Revenue at Rosslare Europort

Revenue seize over 220,000 cigarettes at Rosslare Europort as a result of routine profiling on Wednesday.

The illegal cigarettes, branded ‘NZ Gold’ and ‘NZ Black', were discovered concealed in an adapted roof compartment, on a German minibus that had arrived on a ferry from Cherbourg in France.

Officers discovered over 222,000 cigarettes with an estimated retail value of almost €175,500, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €137,000.

A man in his 20s was questioned and investigations are ongoing.

A revenue spokesperson said: "This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.

"If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295."

Last month, revenue officers, along with the assistance of detector dog Gus, seized almost three million illegal cigarettes at Dublin Port.

The cigarettes were concealed in metal frames in a consignment arriving from Poland.

They were branded ‘Marlboro’ and had an estimated retail value of more than €2.3 million, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €1.8 million.
