Over 2000 youngsters turned out for annual Reamonn Gormley Memorial Soccer Festival

Over 2000 young football players scored for charity at the weekend for the eighth annual Reamonn Gormley Memorial Soccer Festival.

Clubs from across the country descended on Hamilton Palace Grounds and the Jock Stein Centre for the three-day event which included fun-fours, five-, seven- and 11-a-side football.

Organised by Blantyre Soccer Academy, it raises money for the Good Child Foundation in Thailand, a charity for children with Down’s syndrome that teen Reamonn, of Blantyre, volunteered with during a gap-year.

Academy chairman Jimmy Whelan said: “We have run the festival every year since Reamonn’s death, and it raises a large sum of money.

“As always, the festivities kicked off with the academy’s young players taking part in a sponsored walk around Strathclyde Park last Friday night, followed by the football on Saturday.

“The event was very well supported, with thousands of parents and family members also turning up to cheer on the young players and see them each receive a medal.

“Thank you to everyone who came along and supported this very worthwhile festival.”

The senior section of the tournament will take place this weekend (Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and 9).

Popular Reamonn was just 19 when he was murdered in an attempted street robbery while walking home from the Parkville Hotel, Blantyre, on February 1, 2011.

Check back next week for more great pictures from the tournament.
