Over 200 pupils asked to self-isolate from Perth and Kinross education facilities

Over 200 pupils had to self-isolate from Perth and Kinross education facilities over a seven-day period this month following a number of positive coronavirus cases.

A total of 226 pupils stayed away from six schools and one childminders, and 12 staff isolated themselves from two schools and one childminders between March 24 and March 30.

The self-isolation precautions were taken after 21 pupils and seven staff members overall tested positive for coronavirus.

Between March 24-30, Oakbank Primary School saw the highest number of individuals self-isolate, 60 pupils and five staff members, due to four positive cases.

Our Lady’s Primary School saw 44 pupils self-isolate after at least one positive result among staff and pupils.

Coupar Angus Primary School told 40 pupils and five staff members to self-isolate, while St John’s RC Academy saw 35 pupils self-isolate after eight cases between them.

Letham Primary School, Goodlyburn Primary School and Partner Provider Childminder all told a handful of staff and/or pupils to self-isolate due to a small number of cases at each facility.

Blairgowrie High School, Perth Academy and St Stephen’s RC Primary School reported a very low number of cases, potentially as little as one each, and therefore told no one to self-isolate.

A Perth and Kinross Council spokesperson said: “We take the safety of our children and young people extremely seriously and have robust risk assessments in place to reduce the risk of transmission of coronavirus.

“We have an established process in place to deal with any cases of COVID-19 identified amongst pupils and staff in our schools in line with national and local health guidance.

“Whenever there is a confirmed case, pupils and staff who are identified as close contacts are asked to self-isolate as a precautionary measure.

“Pupils are supported to learn at home until they can return to school.

“For clarity regarding the figures, there would be no requirement for other pupils and/or staff to self-isolate where no close contacts of confirmed cases have been identified.”
