More than 200 people have died from coronavirus in Leeds hospitals in just six weeks

More than 200 people have lost their lives to coronavirus at hospitals in Leeds in just six weeks.

Today, NHS England announced that another 17 people have died at the city's hospitals after contracting the virus, which means the death toll has reached 202.

Dr Yvette Oade, chief medical officer at the trust, said: “We can confirm that sadly, since March 16, 202 patients who tested positive for Covid-19 and were in our care have died.

"Their families have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time."

ONS data shows that after testing positive for the virus in Leeds, 13 people died in care homes, seven people died at home and four lost their lives in hospices, in the week leading up to April 10. It is expected to update those figures in the coming weeks.

Across Yorkshire, 1,393 people, including 195 in Sheffield and 122 in Bradford, have died in hospital after testing positive for the virus.

Yesterday, the Department for Health announced a total of 157,149 people have tested positive for the virus in the UK and the death toll has passed 21,000.

During at speech in Downing Street, Prime Minister Boris Johnson praised people for adhering to the social distancing measures and said "we are beginning to turn the tide", but warned that there is still a "risk of a second major outbreak and huge loss of life".

Mr Johnson also urged people and businesses across the country to remain patient during the lockdown.

He added: "I refuse to throw away all the effort and the sacrifice of the British people and risk a second outbreak.

"I ask you to contain your impatience because I believe we are coming to the end of this first phase of the conflict."
