More than 2,200 dead from confirmed or suspected coronavirus in Scotland

More than 2,200 people have died of confirmed or suspected coronavirus in Scotland.

Updated figures, from the National Records of Scotland (NRS), show 2,272 deaths have been recorded as of Wednesday, April 26.

The figures, which are announced every week, account for all deaths registered in Scotland where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.

These numbers differ from those announced daily by the Scottish Government as they include all suspected and probable cases of the virus.

According to the NRS there were 656 deaths relating to Covid-19 between April 20 and April 26 – a rise of four on the 651 registered between April 13 and April 19.

Over a third of all registered deaths involving Covid-19 occurred in care homes with 52 per cent of registered deaths being in hospitals and nine per cent at home or non-institutional settings.

Almost three quarters of registered deaths involving COVID-19 to date were people aged 75 or over.

Of all deaths to date involving COVID-19, 53 per cent were male and 47 per cent were female.

The total number of deaths registered in Scotland from April 20 to April 26 was 1,830 – 68 per cent more than the average number of deaths registered in the same week over the last five years, which was 1,087.

Of these 743 excess deaths, 85 per cent were deaths where COVID-19 was the underlying cause of death.

It comes as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced the daily figures from the Scottish Government.

A total of 1,415 Scots have now sadly died after a positive test for coronavirus, this is an increase of 83 deaths since Tuesday.

A total number of 11,034 positive cases are now reported in Scotland, an increase of 318.
