Recent pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses across the United States have resulted in a significant number of arrests, with demonstrators, including students and faculty members, being detained since the initial arrests at Columbia University two weeks ago.
According to a CNN review of university and law enforcement statements, more than 250 protesters were arrested on May 2, following a day of intense demonstrations on April 30 that saw nearly 400 arrests, marking the largest number of detentions in a single day since the protests began.
Since April 18, over 2,100 individuals have been arrested on college and university campuses as institutions gear up for their spring commencement ceremonies. The University of Southern California, where close to 100 protesters were detained on April 24, had to cancel its primary commencement event due to the ongoing protests.
Protests have taken place on more than 40 campuses across at least 25 states, with demands varying from one campus to another. A common focus of the demonstrations is the call for universities to divest from companies with financial connections to Israel amid the conflict with Hamas. Additionally, there have been instances of counter-protests, leading to clashes at institutions like UCLA.
As the situation unfolds, sources are closely monitoring campus protests and will continue to update the map with any new arrests or developments.
