Over 150 flats to be built on vacant land near Glasgow Green

Over 100 new flats are set to be built close to Glasgow Green in the city's east end.

Plans to build five apartment blocks on vacant land bounded by Main Street and Newhall Street, across from Police Scotland 's administrative headquarters.

The residential development made up of one and two-bedroom apartments will front onto the River Clyde.

The development will include 128 car parking spaces, 151 bike parking spaces for residents and 38 for visitors and amenity space.

Planning documents explained: “ Glasgow Green lies immediately to the north-west of the site and provides formal and informal sports facilities, children’s play and ample amenity greenspace, with Richmond Park adding to this considerably.

"Within the site, there are two amenity green spaces linked by a tree-lined central pedestrian route.

“These grassed areas allow for informal use in the residential area and give quick access to the wider areas facilities.”

The site is bounded to the south-west by the River Clyde. However, an inspection found the land is not at risk of flooding as it’s located one metre above the 200-year flood level and “therefore located outwith the functional floodplain”.

“The landscape design at Newhall Road is designed to take advantage of the prime location on the banks of the River Clyde and close to the central municipal green space of Glasgow Green,” the report adds.

“It is also at a key junction of two city thorough fairs in an area which has seen extensive regeneration of which the development will form a continuing part.”

Glasgow City Council has given the green light for the development to go ahead.
