Over 130 patients waiting for beds in Irish hospitals nationwide

There were 136 patients waiting for beds in Irish hospitals on Monday, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

Of those admitted, 121 were waiting in the emergency department, while 15 were waiting in a ward elsewhere in the hospital.

The worst hit hospital was University Hospital Limerick with 46 patients waiting for a bed.

Mullingar Hospital was the second-worst affected, with 18 patients while the Mater Hospital in Dublin had 16.

A number of hospitals, including Beaumont Hospital and University Hospital Waterford had no patients waiting.

Every morning at 8am, INMO members count how many patients are waiting in the Emergency Department for a bed and how many are waiting in wards elsewhere in the hospital.

The INMO Trolley Watch counts the number of patients who have been admitted to acute hospitals, but who are waiting for a free bed.

These patients are often being treated on trolleys in corridors, but they may also be on chairs, in waiting rooms, or simply wherever there’s space.
