Over 11,000 people lose jobs over coronavirus in Japan

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry announced Tuesday there were 11,798 irregular employees who were let go, had their contracts terminated, or were expected to lose jobs in the near future, as of July 3, due to the effects of the coronavirus. The figure comes from data collected from May 25 from Hello Work job introduction offices around the nation, suggesting the figure could be much higher.

By type of work, those in the food industry comprised 2,146 people, those in manufacturing were 1,989 and dispatch workers were 1,936.
