Over 1000 South Lanarkshire children will wake up to toys galore this Christmas thanks to appeal

Over 1000 disadvantaged children across South Lanarkshire will awake to gifts galore this Christmas Day – thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our readers.

Once again the Lanarkshire public, as well as a host of local businesses, churches, organisations and charities, chipped in to help make the Hamilton Advertiser’s Christmas Toy Appeal 2021 another massively successful year.

Working in conjunction with our partners at the Salvation Army Hamilton, we took delivery of quite literally thousands of gifts – including toys, fragrance sets, clothes and nightwear – for underprivileged youngsters and teenagers across the county.

We also received thousands of pounds in cash and gift cards that were spent purchasing even more items, so that every child will receive a bag full of goodies - and of course some Christmas Day sweeties - this Saturday, December 25.

Advertiser reporter Leona Greenan, who co-ordinates the appeal each year, said: “We have been completely overwhelmed with the level of support received this year once again.

“Such generosity means every child on South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) social work services will now enjoy tearing open dozens of gifts on Christmas morning.

"But not only that, we are delighted to say that we have been able to help a number of other organisations who support people in need.

"That includes homeless units, charities who help people affected by addiction, nurseries in poverty stricken areas, pupils in need at Lanarkshire’s primary and secondary schools and over 100 outside referrals for those who are struggling this Christmas.

“So, we want to extend a huge thank you to every single person and organisation who donated to our appeal, as well as a massive thank you to Captain Wendy Leisk of Hamilton Salvation Army and her team of wonderful volunteers who give up their time to help us put all this together.”

Advertiser editor Robert Mitchell was also blown away by the generosity shown again this year.

He said: “Quite simply the only word to describe the support shown is wow!

“We cannot believe how many toys and gifts were donated, not to mention the cash and gift cards that people very generously handed over to ensure that disadvantaged children within our communities do not go without.

“A big well done and thanks to Leona, our friends at the Salvation Army and SLC on another very successful Toy Appeal.

"Thank you all so much."
