Over 100 Merseyside schools hit by coronavirus outbreaks after 36 more added to list

More than a hundred Merseyside schools have now announced positive coronavirus cases after another 36 schools were added to the list.

The news comes amid warnings of a region-wide lockdown, with the rates of cases per 100,000 people going well above 200 in some areas.

Knowsley recorded the country’s highest coronavirus infection rate last week, with Liverpool not far behind.

Findings by the ECHO show more and more schools have been impacted by positive cases and there are now thousands of children in self-isolation, across the region.

Bellerive FCJ Catholic College and Notre Dame Catholic College both, separately, confirmed positive coronavirus cases yesterday (Monday).

Bellerive said those who have been in direct or close contact are now “self-isolating for 14 days and the school has been cleaned appropriately”, while Notre Dame said a “small number of children… will be staying at home for 10 days”.

Some pupils who attend The Grange Academy in Runcorn were also advised to self-isolate from yesterday, following “a confirmed case within the Year 7 and Year 8 Bubbles”.

Parents of reception pupils at All Saints Catholic primary school in Bootle received letters yesterday morning advising to stay at home until October 8.

Part of the letter reads: “We are asking you to do this to reduce the further spread of Covid-19 to others in the community.”

The ECHO understands some children from Year 1 and Year 6 bubbles are also isolating.

Some Anfield Road primary pupils are required to self-isolate, after “an adult working within the Da Vincis class bubble part of Year 5 tested positive for Covid-19”.

Letters sent to parents say the school will remain open to all children, including Year 5 children who are in different bubbles.

Springwood Heath primary school in Garston advised all parents of a confirmed Covid-19 case yesterday. A number of children who had come into contact with the individual have been told to stay at home for 14 days.

Broadgreen International, Archbishop Blanch, Broughton Hall, Gateacre, De La Salle, St Francis Xavier’s, St Francis of Assisi, St Margaret’s and St Hilda’s secondary schools; and Mosspits Lane, St Mary’s CE, Gilmour Juniors, Kensington Primary, Fazakerely Primary, Leamington, Middlefield, Norman Pannell, St Francis de Sales, The Trinity Catholic primary schools, in Liverpool, have also confirmed positive coronavirus cases.

Greenbank High, Holy Family, Chesterfield High, and Hillside High, in Sefton, have been impacted by Covid-19 cases, as well as Birkdale Primary and Christ Church CE (Bootle).

St Albert’s Catholic, Saints Peter and Paul Catholic, Blacklow Brow, Knowsley Lane, and St Marie’s Catholic primary schools in Knowsley have also been added to the list.

Holy Spirit Catholic and CE primary in Wirral reported a positive case earlier this month.
