Over 10,000 rounds of ammunition found on Northumberland beach

Over 10,000 rounds of ammunition have been found on a Northumberland beach.

On Thursday, January 28, police were called to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on following reports that the items had been discovered in the sand.

Northumbria Police then cordoned off part of the beach after the ammunition was found, an investigation into the find is under way.

Police officers alongside specialist teams cordoned carried out searches to find other items.

A large cordon was in place throughout Thursday afternoon and specialist police search teams were at the scene.

Now it's been revealed that over 10,000 rounds of ammunition have been found in the area.

An investigation has been launched into where the ammunition may have come from.

At the time, a spokesperson for the Northumbria Police said: “We can confirm we were called to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea after reports that ammunition had been found on the beach.

"Officers have attended and the ammunition is in the process of being recovered.

"Enquiries to establish who the items belong to are now ongoing.”
