Lockdown figures reveal police have dispersed over 8,000 more people in Glasgow than in Edinburgh

Police have dispersed over 8,500 more people in Glasgow for breaching coronavirus guidelines than in Edinburgh since lockdown began, new figures reveal.

In the latest figures released by Police Scotland dated to June 10, 11,602 people were asked to disperse by officers, with a further 3,758 ordered to do so and 75 dispersals 'using reasonable force'.

62 arrests have been made since the ‘Coronavirus Interventions’ (CVI) recording system was introduced on April 6, with a total of 815 issued with fixed penalty notices.

The CVI system allows Police Scotland to gather data in relation to the public co-operation levels with the new legislation within Glasgow and across Scotland.

The Glasgow figures look even higher when compared to the figures released for non-compliance with the coronavirus guidelines in the Edinburgh area.

The 'E Division' figures show that 3,030 were asked to disperse by officers (8,572 less than in Glasgow), with a further 415 ordered to do so (3,348 less than in Glasgow), and 44 people dispersed using reasonable force.

While 167 fixed penalty notices have been issued in the capital to date (648 less than in Glasgow) and 14 arrests have been made.

The news comes after Glasgow Live reported last month how recorded crimes in Glasgow had plummeted amid the lockdown, with Police recording 11,549 crimes between March 9 and May 3, compared to 14,060 for the same period last year.
