Over 12,000 homes without electricity as Storm Atiyah wreaks havoc across Munster

Thousands of homes across Munster are without electricity as Storm Atiyah wreaks havoc across the south-west.

A massive fault in Kenmare, Co Kerry has left 10,000 premises without power, while the ESB’s powercheck service shows further outages across Cork, Clare, Limerick, Donegal, Sligo and other parts of Kerry.

There are also reports of a considerable fault in the Carrigaline area of Cork, which affects 2578 people.

The ESB says that it is currently working to restore electricity to affected areas.

Met Eireann has issued a Status Orange weather warning for Co Kerry as gusts of over 130km/h are expected to hit the county this evening.

Flights from both Shannon and Cork airports have also been cancelled as a result of the weather.

Trains between Tralee and Mallow are facing lengthy delays as services operate at reduced speeds.

Met Eireann warns that conditions will remain 'very windy' tonight across Munster with strong to gale force, west to northwest winds.

Showers are expected to become isolated overnight, with winds gradually easing towards dawn.

Temperatures will range between 5 and 8 degrees.
