Over 1,000 Volkswagen Polo cars urgently recalled in Ireland over safety fears

Over 1,000 Volkswagen Polo are being recalled in Ireland over safety fears.

The consumer watchdog says a possible safety issue could lead to the failure of braking power assistance.

Around 1,093 Polo cars, produced between September 22, 2019 and February 6, are subject to the recall.

A statement explained: "Volkswagen Group Ireland Limited is carrying out a voluntary recall on certain ‘Polo’ passenger vehicles.

"A safety issue has been identified, whereby, it is possible that owing to incorrectly closing non-return valves in the vacuum lines, which supply negative pressure to the brake booster, oil may be sucked towards and enter the brake booster.

"The oil may damage the membrane of the brake booster, which may lead to the failure of braking power assistance.

"The legal requirements for minimum deceleration values are also met without braking power assistance."

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission said the company will write directly to affected owners, advising them of the next steps to take.

Those who believe they are affected can contact Volkswagen Customer Care on 1850 81 2761, or speak to their local Volkswagen Retailer for further information.
