'Oven ready? Thanks to Brexit now we're all turkeys in the eyes of the world'

It was the breathtaking Brexit lie that sounded the death knell for the Remain vote – that Turkey was about to enter the EU and Britain would be flooded by millions of Muslims.

More immigrants coming into the country? Not on my watch.

Britain would be great again and reign supreme in charge of its own borders.

Not everyone voted Out for that reason but the racists and Islamophobes gobbled up that lie that has left us in a state – certainly not of sovereignty.

We have to pretend that we are all much better off than before, despite having to pay extra to go on holiday to the usual European haunts, and face horrendous queues at Dover and massive hikes in food prices because there are no workers willing to do low-paid but necessary jobs. Of course the pandemic played a part, but anyone who thinks Brexit hasn’t negatively affected the economy is in cloud-cuckoo-land.

Having won a massive majority of 80 seats, Boris Johnson stood on his Brexit “oven-ready deal” which both Tory leader hopefuls Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak voted for. But they are now reversing the Northern Ireland Protocol and having to allow European workers to come in to work, therefore undoing the “fantastic” Brexit deal in order to get Brexit redone.

Well done. Who’s the turkey now?

It is quite farcical. And to think Britain once had the capability of colonising the world.

Meanwhile, Turkey itself, the country that was so despised, is having a record-breaking year of tourism with desperate Brits like me unable to book holidays there.

All I’m seeing and hearing on social media is people are going there, have been there or are there. Everyone else is wishing they were there.

Oh, the irony.

The country’s moment in the sun continues with Turkish-English actress Ekin-Su Culculoglu winning Love Island and capturing the hearts of the reality TV watching public.

Frankly, I would have much more respect if anyone in power actually admitted that Brexit was a heinously costly mistake that has made us look like turkeys voting for Christmas.

I won’t hold my breath.
