'Outstanding' Accies deserved their derby win, says star Hakeem Odoffin

Hakeem Odoffin says Hamilton played some outstanding football in their 4-1 derby win at Motherwell on Saturday, building on their 1-1 draw at home to Rangers.

Goals from Bruce Anderson and Marios Ogkmpoe either side of a Ross Callachan penalty after Motherwell captain Stephen O'Donnell was sent off, had Accies 3-0 up at the interval.

David Moyo netted a fourth in the second half with a classy finish, before Mark O'Hara pulled a goal back for Motherwell from the spot.

Midfielder Odoffin, 22, says Accies were 'at it' from the start and deserved their win.

He said: "It’s a great result and a great performance from the boys as well.

"From the off, we were at it. To get four goals away from home is always good.

"Some of the football was outstanding. We know we can play, but firstly you have to earn the right to do that.

"You have to be prepared to work hard then spaces will open, and you are able to play the football that we know we can play.

"I would say the performance was the most pleasing aspect.

"Obviously the goals – having four different goal scorers – is great as well, as it means everyone is chipping in to the win.

"But the performance was massive. After a result like last week [against Rangers], it’s massive to be able to build on that and I thought we did that.

"It's massive to have consistency. To see that we've been able to back up last week's performance with another one is huge, plus it was away from home in a derby game as well.

"It’s massive. I know the fans aren’t here but I know it means a lot to them.

"For us to be able to get those wins is massive and I’m really pleased.

"I really enjoyed myself. It's about earning that right. We were well on top of them, and were getting our tackles in.

"When we got the ball down we were able to play and create space for each other. It felt good."

The win at Fir Park took Accies off the foot of the Premiership, but Odoffin says there's still a lot of hard work ahead for his side, starting with the trip to St Mirren on Wednesday.

He said: "We get written off, but I feel that motivation has to come from within us. We have pride and we know what we’re capable of.

"It’s just about us having that pride and motivation within ourselves to be able to perform week in, week out, regardless of what the noise is on the outside.

"I never had any doubts. I’ve always believed in the boys.

"We've had a lot of injuries and Covid situations but it's just about staying positive, sticking to your task, listening to what the gaffer says and being ready for whatever comes.

"It's about keeping us close-knit and on the same page, while making sure everyone is buying in. The last couple of performances especially have shown that’s happening."
