Last year I wrote about a crazy race I went to watch in France – and Italy. In it, two teams of runners vied to race the entire way around Mont Blanc, passing through three countries en route, between sunrise and sunset in one day. To “Outrun the Sun”. One of these team beat the sun, the other lost out, almost ridiculously, by a mere 30 seconds.
It was a race in which pace is utterly irrelevant, and the technical challenges daunting. And this year it’s happening again – complete with similar teams of professional road and trail runners.
But there’s also a new twist. There will be five teams this year, all with the same 148km to cover (precious little of it flat) and 15 hours and 41 minutes in which to do so. One team will all be amateurs – fancy being on that team? The organisers are looking for 15 runners to run legs of the relay. Winners will get training, mentoring from top runners and experts and, of course, a trip to Chamonix.
So if you fancy spending midsummer eve in the mountains, check beatthesun.asics.com for the application details. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
