Outrageous excuses for flouting lockdown restrictions revealed by police

A man who claimed he didn't know about the coronavirus is among the most outrageous excuses for breaching lockdown restrictions.

Cumbria Police has revealed some of the bizarre reasons given to officers for people defying the rules after it announced it had issued more than 100 fixed penalty notices for breaching lockdown.

Officers were left stunned when the Whitehaven man, who was caught cutting his friend's hair, told them he wasn't aware that there was a global pandemic going on, LancsLive reports.

Another shameless social distancing flout came from a man who took 200-mile round trip from Manchester for a 20-minute walk in Keswick, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Penalties were also handed to a man who refused to go home after being stopped on his quad bike, a man who was caught repeatedly drinking in the street and two women who reportedly attended a house party.

Cumbria Police warned that officers will continue to issue the £60 fixed penalty notices to those unwilling to stay at home - event though it has been reported the Government is poised to ease some of the restrictions in the coming days.

The force said it issued 107 fixed penalty notices between March 13 and April 27.
