Outrage as thugs vandalise newly opened Ballyfermot skate park AGAIN

Locals were left outraged after thugs vandalised a west Dublin skate park for the second time this week.

The new Le Fanu Skate Park and Playground in Ballyfermot had opened its doors to the public on Tuesday.

Residents were furious after vandals drove around the car damaging the pitches on Friday night.

Pictures shared by the Ballyfermot United Facebook page show tyre tracks running across the football pitches.

The caption read: “Once again the lawns were subjected to antisocial behaviour when a car recklessly entered the park due to there being no fences at the new Skate Park and Playground.

“They caused damage to our small sided pitches which on a normal weekend we would have up to 100 kids playing matches in this area.

“The new Skate Park and Playground is a great asset to the Ballyfermot Community but it needs the appropriate safety measures put in place to ensure stuff like this doesn't happen again. It will only be a matter of time before that too is wrecked.

“Both the Skate Park/Playground and the football pitches are key to the community to help the kids in the area.”

Local Sinn Fein councillor Daithi Doolan hit out at the “deplorable” incident.

He said on social media: “What happened last night in the new skateboard park and Le Fanu Park was deplorable. It was unacceptable.

“Those involved should take a long look at themselves and the damage they are doing to our community. We can not let a tiny minority destroy this great community resource.

“Today I have contacted DCC, Gardaí and all the other local councillors. I have demanded that the park be fully fenced in. Locked at night. And covered by CCTV.

“It is only by working together that we can ensure this park is not lost to vandalism.”

Earlier this week we reported that the skate park had been left trashed, littered, and vandalised just one day after it finally opened.

The shocking images showed the state of the park the morning after, where some young families and a couple of young lads skating were doing their best to avoid the debris.

Rubbish - including plastic bags, bottles, and an abandoned trolley - were scattered around the park.

Tree branches were broken, and graffiti is now adorning parts of both the main concrete bowl and the playground.
