Outrage as stoned driver who killed two cyclists gets 11 years

People are outraged by a man who mowed down and killed two parents after he received an 11-year sentence.

Colin Smith ploughed into mum-of-two Clare Killey and dad-of-two Anthony Cope after doing 72mph in a 40mph zone.

The 23-year-old was more than twice the cannabis limit at the wheel of a white Ford Fiesta RS Turbo on false plates.

The coward left his victims to die, then tried to blame another driver, who he claimed "pulled out" in front of him in Speke.

But he was found guilty of causing both cyclists' deaths and seriously injuring Katy Nicholson, a passenger in another car.

Judge David Potter today jailed Smith, formerly of Lower Road, Halewood, now of Lavender Gardens, Warrington, for 11 years.

The judge said after his "lies" to police and a jury, Smith now accepted that he "caused the deaths of two innocent people".

Liverpool Crown Court heard Smith had a car full of friends as he sped along Dunlop Road, at around 7pm, on February 28, 2019.

Airport worker Michael Morgan, driving a red Ford Fiesta, was intending to turn right onto Dunlop Road from a side road.

But as he made the manoeuvre, Smith came haring around a "blind bend" towards him, and clipped the nearside of his car.

Smith swerved to try and avoid the car, which sent him into the opposite lane, where he hit a kerb, the two cyclists and a Ford C-Max.

ECHO readers have expressed their disgust at Smith's crimes and outrage over the sentence given.

Michael David Martingell-Purden said: "Totally agree that he's jailed and should be for longer."

Vicky Ledwidge said: "Should of been 11 years for each person who's life he took, justice system is a joke."

Commenter ImAlanPartridge said: "Is this what two lives are worth… 11 years, out in what, seven or eight? (Maybe even earlier on good behaviour, tag or appeal?) So wrong that sentence… I feel so bad for the families of the two cyclists! Maybe they should appeal for a longer sentence!!"

lfc2003 said: "Just read the article again slowly. Blood is boiling now due to the outrageous sentence he has received. Definitely should have been given two life sentences for two murders. Three year driving ban upon his release from jail is absolutely disgusting. Judge hang your head head in shame. Terrible sentencing."

"Please the families involved start a petition, let's all voice our disgust, and keep this murderer banged away for the time the offence deserves... LIFE."

Dandare02 said: "What an absolute woeful sentence for such horrific crimes. The law is not working for victims and their families."
