Outrage as racist golliwog dolls spotted on sale in Scots shopping centre

Anti-racist groups have reacted with fury after it emerged that golliwogs are being sold in a Scots shopping mall.

The dolls, which caricature black people, are on display in bedding shop Crystal Clear in the Savoy Centre in Glasgow.

And an employee said they were selling well, with £8.99 for a small one and £12.99 for the larger doll.

She said calling them golliwogs could be considered racist but they referred to them as “golly dolls”.

The worker added: “Our foreign friends buy them, different nationalities, and we have never had an issue with their sale. ”

But human rights lawyer Aamer Anwar said: “I can’t believe that anyone with a shred of decency would be selling golliwogs, especially in a centre frequented by families with their children.

“It is a deeply offensive and racist relic from the dark ages that has no place anywhere in 21st century Scotland.”

Golliwogs are black-skinned dolls with exaggerated lips and frizzy hair and are based on a character created by kids’ author Florence Kate Upton in the 19th century.

The dolls were created during a racist era and are based on minstrels – the demeaning ridiculing of Negroes by whites in black make up.

A spokesman for Show Racism the Red card said: “We are extremely saddened.

“The sale of these dolls perpetuate racism as they hark back to a time when the mockery and stereotyping of black people was considered a social norm rendering black people as submissive and lesser.

“We urge the public to refrain from buying such overtly racist items and we hope the shop selling golliwogs would consider taking them out of the store as one cannot profit on the oppression of an entire community.”
