Outrage as McDonald's refuses to serve army veteran quarter pounder over necklace

A military veteran was refused service at a McDonald's because of his necklace, he claims.

Jonathan Nagel was in the fast food restaurant in Everett, Washington on Friday wearing a 10cm talon-shaped blade around his neck.

The former soldier, who has served in Afghanistan, was asked by the managed to put the jewellery away.

Under Washington law, residents can carry large knives in public so long as they are visible.

Mr Nagel refused to put the bladed necklace away, despite the manager pointing out that there were children about.

He told KING-TV: "I'm a martial artist. I'm not the type of guy that goes around attacking people."

Mr Nagel decided to put the necklace away before arguing with the member of staff.

He claims he was then told to leave the shop before he could complete his order.

The confrontation has left Mr Nagel - who believes he has the right to buy a burger - furious.

"I fought for this country, I deserve to be here,” he said.

"I deserve a Quarter Pounder with cheese if I want one, I don't deserve to be discriminated against."

Alefa Eserjose, the owner and operator of the store, has stood by the decision to refuse Mr Nagel service.

He told Fox News that "Safety and security of our guests and crew" are the restaurant's top priority.

"We will continue to ensure our restaurants are a safe space open to anyone in the community where customers and crew feel comfortable," he added.
