Outrage as hundreds gather at popular Dublin beach on same night full lockdown is announced

Large crowds gathered at a north Dublin beach on Wednesday night in a blatant disregard for Covid-19 rules.

On the same evening that Taoiseach Micheal Martin announced a return to full lockdown, footage emerged of hundreds of people playing music and setting off fireworks in Portmarnock.

It is understood that the get-together was organised for the full moon on New Year's Eve, but was then brought forward as more restrictions loomed.

Locals reported the garda helicopter over the seaside village last night as gardai responded to the scene, which is in breach of Covid-19 regulations.

A number of Portmarnock locals contacted Dublin Live to share their disappointment that the event was organised and went ahead.

There were 13 further Covid-19 related deaths announced on Wednesday, along with 1,718 cases - the highest ever.

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí are currently responding to reports of a disturbance on Portmarnock Beach. Gardaí are en route to the alleged incident."
