Outrage as Glasgow loyalists plan Easter Sunday march past church where priest was spat on

A Glasgow loyalist group have been accused of "inflaming tensions" as they plan to march by two Catholic Churches on Easter Sunday.

The Apprentice Boys of Derry (Bridgeton) have notified Glasgow City Council of their plans to parade through the streets - past St Alphonsus and St Mary's churches - on Sunday, April 21.

On July 7 last year, Orange walk thug Bradley Wallace spat on Father Thomas White as his group marched past St Alphonsus.

He was jailed for 10 months after the assault on London Road after DNA matched his saliva with that found on the priest's vestment.

Tensions have been rising surrounding marches in the area - with campaigning group Call It Out announcing they will oppose the latest plans.

Posting on Twitter , the group said: "It is with some distress that we wish to alert the Catholic/Irish Catholic community to a notification of a march by an anti-Catholic organisation which will pass both St Alphonsus and St Mary's, Calton on Easter Sunday.

"This is a blatant provocation and we will oppose it."

They added: "To seek to pass these Churches (both of which will be in use at the time) on the holiest day of the year is a deliberate attempt to inflame tensions.

"We call on the organisers to step back from this and to listen to our reasonable request to refrain from passing Catholic churches".

The Apprentice Boys of Derry (Brigeton) say around 80 people will take part in the procession, which will march along: Tullis St, Main St, Bridgeton Cross, London Rd, Trongate, High St, John Knox St, Cathedral Square.

On February 16, Call it Out held a silent protest outside St Alphonsus as an Orange walk passed by.

Standing in high vis jackets, protesters lined the street outside the church and held a banner that read: "No anti-Catholic marches past Catholic Churches."
