Tens of thousands of people have signed a petition calling for tourists who were filmed throwing stones at a swordfish which later died to be punished.
Video footage of the attack, which happened in shallow water on a beach in Chalkida, Greece, sparked outrage after it was shared on social media.
People can be seen swimming after and trying to grab the fish as it swims frantically among them. Others can be seen pelting it with stones.
Many people are simply standing around watching and filming the incident on their phones.
The swordfish was later found dead at the harbour, according to reports.
A petition demanding that swimmers involved and authorities who failed to intervene are prosecuted and fined has so far received almost 28,000 signatures.
“Our voice must be heard so that the unacceptable mob behaviour towards every weak creature finally stops,” it says.
The town of Chalkida is located on Evia, the second largest Greek island after Crete and a popular destination for tourists.
