Outrage after grave site at Derry's City Cemetery vandalised

A number of graves have been damaged at a Derry graveyard.

It is understood that the vandalism took place at the lower section of the cemetery on Derry's cityside.

Ornaments and flowers in the vicinity were seriously damaged and hurled around, sparking outrage amongst the local community.

Mayor of Derry, Brian Tierney,  said he was extremely "shocked and saddened" at the "wanton destruction" of the graves.

He added that his thoughts were with the families who owned the graves at this time and assured them that everything would be done to prevent incidents like this in the future.

Councillor Tierney said: “We would urge the public to be aware that the City Cemetery is a place of quiet reflection and such incidents can cause great distress to bereaved families."

Mr Tierney said that CCTV cameras had been installed in a number of areas in the cemetery to assist in deterring and identifying anyone involved in anti-social behaviour.

Last week the Derry City and Strabane District Council announced that all of its cemeteries will close at the earlier time of 8.30pm from this week to reflect the dark evenings.

"Anyone who witnesses any  anti-social activity or vandalism is asked to contact the PSNI directly or to report it to Council’s Community Safety Wardens, who also operate in the area," Councillor Tierney said.

Alliance Party Councillor Rachael Ferguson added: [I'm] disgusted that someone had caused such destruction to graves at the city cemetery.

"I urge anyone with any details to come forward to the PSNI."

A police spokesperson said that no report in relation to the incident had been made to them.
